Foster + Partners is an award winning, internationally renowned architectural practise. Our Model shop is based in the London headquarters and has an exciting opportunity for a Sketch Model shop Technician to join the team.
This position is responsible for assisting architects in the production of high-quality sketch models, mock-ups, preparation of exhibitions and presentation material. Additionally, the role involves collaboration in the organization of exhibitions, both locally and internationally, including the handling and transportation of models.
We are looking for an individual with the following skill set:
- Qualified to minimum HND level, preferably degree level, in a relevant subject
- Able to demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge, accuracy and ability of model making skills
- Demonstrate a high level of knowledge of sketch workshop machinery to include hot wire cutter and laser cutter
- Able to use relevant tools, machinery and power equipment within the H&S guidelines as necessary for the completion of projects
- Advanced level of 2D CAD skills required
- Good level of 3D CAD skills required
- Good computer skills in work, excel and outlook
- Advanced understanding and operation of modelshop computer machining processes which include laser cutting and CNC routing
- An understanding of specialist modelling techniques
- Able to share knowledge and skills with a team

The modelmaker position plays a key role in bringing architectural designs to life through the creation of high-quality physical models. The Modelmaker will work closely with architects and design teams to produce models for exhibitions, client presentations, and various displays.

We are looking for an individual with the following skill set:
- Qualified to a minimum HND level, preferably Degree level, in relevant subject area or equivalent industry experience
- Able to demonstrate a high level of accuracy and ability of model making skills
- Able to demonstrate a good knowledge of workshop machinery to include circular saw, band saw, pillar drill, sanding disc, laser cutter, lathe and mill (CNC or Manual)
- Able to use relevant tools, machinery and power equipment within the H&S guidelines as necessary for the completion of projects
- Able to understand architectural drawings and quickly decipher relevant information required
- Good level of 2D CAD skills required
- Basic level of 3D CAD skills required

Our In-house Model shop has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic junior model maker to join the small team.
The successful candidate will have the ability to adapt to a fast paced and evolving design process, working within tight timeframes and using a wide variety of processes and materials to create engaging models that convey the design intent.
Qualifications and skill set:
- Have an Industry recognized HND Qualification or Degree in the relevant field.
- Experienced in 2D and good knowledge of 3D CAD. The office uses Bentley MicroStation, Rhino and Materialise Magics.
- Able to demonstrate a safe working knowledge of workshop machinery, including laser cutter, circular saw, band saw, disc sander, pillar drill, power equipment and hand tools.
- Be able to mix and match colours and have experience using a spray gun.
- Experience of SLA and filament printing desirable, though full training will be provided.
- Able to work as part of an effective creative team.
- Due to the nature of the position and the requirement to meet deadlines there will be a need to have a flexible approach to working additional hours if required.

We are seeking an experienced technician to manage and operate our large format SLA 3D printer. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in SLA 3D printing, be technically adept, and have a keen eye for detail to ensure consistent high-quality outputs.
You will be required to:
- Setup, operate, and maintain the SLA 3D printer.
- Prepare and optimize 3D CAD models for printing.
- Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Monitor print jobs to ensure quality and adherence to specifications.
- Post-processing of printed parts.
- Archive & Maintain records of print jobs and maintenance activities.
- Collaborate with design and Modelmaking teams to meet project requirements.
Essential Skills:
- Proven experience with SLA 3D printing technology.
- Familiarity with large format SLA machines is highly desirable.
- Strong technical and mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and 3D CAD models.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to quality.

Based near Colchester in Essex, we specialise in nautical and marine models but also work across prototyping and architectural industries. We’re looking for an experienced model maker to join our team. This is an exciting role to work with some of the most prestigious names in superyacht and military boat designs.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience creating scale models and a good understanding of the processes required including 3D printing, laser cutting, sanding, finishing, spray painting and reading 2D and 3D plans. 3D drawing in Rhino is also advantageous. At SMW we utilise 3D printers, CNC milling, and other technology to create each scale model to a high standard; the person we are looking for will enjoy a hands-on role, have a meticulous eye for detail, and be driven to create a high finish model.
The candidate will be responsible for producing high-specification components for models either individually, or as part of a team working on sections that will come together in a seamless and functional manner. A keen eye for detail, a passion for creating beautiful things, and a love of anything nautical are all beneficial!

You will be required to:
- Use Rhino, AutoCAD etc. to prepare drawings for model production.
- Use laser cutting machines and SLA 3D printers.
- Spray paint components using a variety of paint types, HVLP guns and airbrush.
- Use workshop machines (Band saw, table saw, bench sander pillar drill etc.) safely and proficiently.
- Use hand skills/tools to assemble model components precisely and with a strong attention to detail.
- Work well in a team, understand technical/architectural drawings and follow design briefs for each project.
Essential Skills:
- Proficient in the use of hand tools and workshop machinery.
- Accomplished in the use of CAD packages, i.e. AutoCAD, Rhino, Revit and similar. (Rhino Essential)
- Training in the field of Model making (BA (Hons) Model Making, Model Design & Effects or similar.)
