The Modelshop team bring to life the vision of the practices’ Architects and supporting design teams, creating three dimensional highly detailed models which play a vital part in the design process at Foster + Partners.
As an integral part of the in house Modelshop team you will be involved in the end to end design process. Working as part of a team, or independently on smaller projects, you will aid in the realisation of some of the futures most renowned international architecture projects in a variety of scales, including 1:1 mock-ups and exhibition models.

To have good knowledge on how to use workshop machinery, a good understanding of hand craft and use of hand tools expected.

We have an immediate need for a design engineer/product modelmaker/prototype engineer with a particular aptitude for developing and building complex mechanisms. The ability to use engineering machinery to fine tolerances is essential. High quality product model finishing skills desirable. The ability to develop mechanical concepts in a CAD package is desirable but not essential. Possible full-time opportunity for the right candidate.

Our current projects include masterplans, new homes, cultural, education, health, retail, hotel and office buildings for institutional, public and private clients in the UK and abroad.
Role and responsibilities
We are looking to recruit an experienced model maker to join our highly skilled in-house workshop. Working within a large and exceptionally equipped modern workshop you will draw on your experience of both the latest and traditional modelmaking techniques and processes to deliver creatively outstanding models.
You will be working on a variety of projects covering all scales, from large masterplans to full size design mock-ups and exhibition models. You will be required to work both independently and as part of a team on a range of high profile projects.
Skills and experience
Sound architectural or model making studio experience
Ability to understand and interpret architectural drawings, hand drawn sketches and written information and to interpret into physical making.
Demonstrable aesthetic and design judgement, as well as high levels of accuracy and a continued passion for making models – from prototypes to large urban design models.
Comfortable using traditional processes and techniques of model making by hand as well as new technologies with knowledge of current architectural trends and techniques.
Knowledge of laser cutting principles, experience on a variety of woodworking machinery, spray painting techniques and 2D and 3D CAD software knowledge.
Comfortable working to tight deadlines with a pro-active, problem solving approach and a collaborative working style.
Sound communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the practice
