There is a vast array of model making tools available, some of which is highly specialised and designed specifically for certain tasks, so your tool box needs to reflect the discipline your are working in.

This may seem a little daunting, but you can start with a few essential tools and slowly build up your toolbox inventory to suit the projects you encounter.

The following tools are really essential to make any model:

• Knife (scalpels, retractable knife, x clamp knife) see range
• Cutting mat (A1, A2, A3, A4) see range
• Safety rule (better not to use standard rulers when cutting with knives) see range
• Abrasives (to clean up or possibly re-shaped you cut with either an abrasive paper, a sanding block or needle files) see range
